We, SK Kampong Gelam CyberkidsSquad would like to dedicate all of the people who are supporting us from day 1, especially to the teachers of SK Kampong Gelam, fellow from other Maxis Cyberkids Camp such as SK Chembong, Negeri Sembilan. Not to forget the Maxis Cyberkids crew who always giving us support to complete the project. Indeed, we have lots of problem throughout the program but Alhamdulillah, we are still able to finish and complete it and atleast fulfill the objective. Thank you.

As a conclusion, here we list out the things that we've done whether we meet the objective or not.

OBJECTIVE

As a support to our goverment effort to send a Malaysian born astronaut to outer space, we are going to present you our replica of a full-spec space shuttle, build by using waste or recycle materials. To give awareness to the pupils and public the benefit of recycling and help to make our environment clean and healthy, we hope that this project will atleast educate our society to appreciate and to keep our earth clean. Together with this, we are going to make presentations and competitions related to the project and let the community get involved with the project.

CONCLUSION

Clearly, we have meet our objective and as an addition, we are able to build a dedicated blog specifically to the Angkasawan Program and as a tribute to the 50th Anniversary of Malaysia independence.

PROJECT : SPACE SHUTTLE COMPELETED

Finally, our full spec space shuttle has been completed by using lots of recycle materials, mostly plastic bottles and aluminium tin cans. Thanks to all SKKG CyberkidsSquad members and all pupils who helped to make this come true.

The model supposed to be displayed under 'Balai Bacaan' hut. But, due to the unpredictable weather, which is raining most of the week, we've decided to put the model in the Computer Lab which is our CyberkidsSquad headquarters.

PROJECT : SPACE SHUTTLE

As the miniature finally restored, we started to build the shuttle tank and the rocket thruster.

Next, is to add the skin of the tank and thruster.

And all ready for assembly!!!

Tomorrow we are going to assemble all the parts and do the decals on it. Hopefully, we will not bump into problems. All the best for tomorrow!!

PROJECT : SPACE SHUTTLE [MINIATURE]

This was our previous miniature project which was conducted for the 1st Phase of Maxis Cyberlinq Competition. This miniature is a successful model which attract most of our pupil to participate in our programs and activities.

Unfortunately, the miniature skin collapse due to air-cond environment which caused the tapes to peel-off it body. Therefore, the restoration process had been undergone to tackle the problem. The skin is now replaced by duct tapes which is commonly used to seal paper boxes. By using this, the grip of the skin is tight enough and can cope with any kind of temperature.

The quiz is randomly held in a weekly assembly. Teacher will read an excerpt of Angkasawan Program and the questions were asked on the spot based on the excerpt read. The first pupil to answer the question correctly is the winner. The questions are:

COMPETITION 2 : MAKING A ROCKET USING ORIGAMI TECHNIQUE

An individual competition that exploit the creativity of our student to create and built a rocket using a piece of paper. Origami is a technique, originated from Japan, which requires a person to make a certain type of model [animal, vehicle, etc.] by using a piece of paper without any other tools such as glue or tapes to attach the built model.

The competition received massive participants from standard 1 to standard 6. But we only manage to pick the best 6 as our winner. The winner are:

22 /10/2007 - Angkasawan Negara returned safely to Earth

Malaysia’s first Angkasawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor landed safely some 340km away from the target landing spot in Arkylk, Kazakhstan on Sunday at 6.37pm Malaysian time after spending approximately 10 days, 21 hours and 16 minutes in space.

The Soyuz TMA-10 capsule which brought him back to Earth also brought home commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Oleg Kotov.

The landing however was not as expected, and this caused some anxiety especially for Dr Sheikh’s mother Datin Zuraida Sheikh Ahmad who was watching the event live. The landing was switched from a nominal aerodynamic reentry mode to a much steeper ballistic trajectory, causing the capsule to tocuh down 340 km of the primary landing site. The cause was not immediately known.

A recovery team comprising six military Russian helicopters later located the capsule and brought out the cosmonauts at 6.52pm, beginning with Yurchikhin, followed by Dr Sheikh Muszaphar and finally Kotov.

They were brought to a tent set up next to the capsule and given immediate medical attention as part of the recovery procedure.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar’s health was reported to be in “very good” condition.

According to NASA, in preparation for landing, the crew of Soyuz TMA-10 closed the hatches from the station to the spacecraft around 10:00 p.m. Houston Time on October 20, 2007. The spacecraft undocked from the ISS at 3.14pm Malaysian time and began its quick descent to Earth.

At 5.47pm, the capsule commenced its de-orbit burn and engine rockets fired for just over four minutes to slow the craft down in preparation for its separation into three parts, one of which – called the descent module – contained the crew members. The other two parts were disposed of in space.

The craft entered the outer reaches of the earth’s atmosphere at 6.14pm. It then picked up speed as it began to be pulled by Earth’s gravity, travelling at speeds over 200m per second.

Once in the atmosphere, the external part of the capsule heated up to a temperature of as high as 9,000 degrees Kelvin (8,700°C).

There was also a 10-minute “communications blackout” when the capsule entered the atmosphere – a normal occurrence caused by a surge of overwhelming heat generated by the capsule, rendering any form of communication impossible.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaludin Jarjis and their wives at the control centre offered a thanksgiving prayer on hearing that Dr Sheikh was well.

Russian Space Agency (Roscosmos) chief Anatoli Perminov then congratulated Datuk Najib.
At a press conference later, Perminov said a commission would be set up to determine why the craft had departed from its trajectory.

"The commission will conduct an in-depth study to determine why the automatic descent was switched off at a 50km altitude," he said through an interpreter.

Those who had hoped to view the landing live were unable to as the screens only showed graphics of the location of the craft.

Malaysian First Astronout

Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Al Masrie bin Sheikh Mustapha (born July 27, 1972) is scheduled to become the first Malaysian astronaut to go into space when he is launched to the International Space Station aboard Soyuz TMA-11 on October 10, 2007 with ISS Expedition 16. He is flying under an agreement with Russia through the Angkasawan program, and will return to Earth with the Expedition 15 crew members Fyodor Yurchikhin and Oleg Kotov after nine days aboard the station.[1]

During a NASA news conference with the Expedition 16 crew on July 23, 2007, Shukor stated he hoped to be able to take various live cell cultures to study during his flight.

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Sheikh Muszaphar obtained his high school education at Maktab Rendah Sains MARA in Muar. He then pursued his MBBS medical degree at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.

Sheikh Muszaphar is an orthopedic doctor, and a trainee lecturer in medicine with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Previously, he has served in Hospital Seremban (1998), Kuala Lumpur General Hospital (1999) and Hospital Selayang (2000-2001)

He is also a model, and has modeled for many commercials and advertisements.

He and three other finalists were selected at the beginning of 2006 for the Malaysian Angkasawan spaceflight program. After completing initial training at Star City in Russia, he and Faiz Khaleed were selected to undergo an 18-month training stint in Russia, at the end of which he was chosen as the prime crew member, while Faiz Khaleed will serve as back-up.

Angkasawan Program

The Angkasawan program is an initiative by the Malaysian government to send a Malaysian to the International Space Station on board Soyuz TMA-11. Angkasawan is the Malay word for 'astronaut'.

This program was officially announced by the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun. Dr. Mahathir Mohhamad as a joint programme with the Russian Federation. It is a project under the government-to-government offset agreement through the purchase of deal of the Sukhoi SU-30MKM fighter jets for the Royal Malaysian Air Force.

Under this agreement the Russian Federation will bear the cost of training of two Malaysian Angkasawan (astronaut) candidates, and later to send one to the International Space Station (ISS). The first Malaysian Angkasawan is expected to be send to the ISS in October 2007.

National Space Agency (ANGKASA), Ministry of Science, Technologies and Innovations have been given the responsibility of commissioning the process of selecting the national astronaut, where 2 out of 4 finalist had been chosen and are undergoing the Astronaut Training Programme in Star City, Russia for 18 months.

PHASE 1 : BUILDING SHUTTLE MINIATURE

Due to the launching ceremony of Malaysia's 50th Independence Day Anniversary Celebration on the 5th July 2007, we managed to build a shuttle miniature by using a mounting board as the wing structure, 5 plastic bottles as the body and 2 rolls of masking tape as the outer layer skin. The 1 and a half meter model was then sprayed to white, to get the look of a real
space shuttle.

STAGE 1 : PROJECT PROPOSAL

Project Objectives

Group target

School students, teachers and community. The model will be displayed at Cyberkids@skkg section at the school's Balai Bacaan. As the shuttle being displayed, the pupils and community, especially the parents who come to fetch their kids after school can look at the built model.

Expected Outcome

To educate the pupil and community on what recycling is all about. With this, we can help to save our world from global warming and green house effect and make our environment clean and healthy.
